Mike has been involved in teaching aquatic activities since 1969, earning his Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor certifications while a student at Kent State University.  He began diving in 1974, earning a PADI Open Water Diver and Advanced Diver certification.  After about a ten year hiatus to raise his children and earn a Masters of Education degree from the University of Akron, he was offered a scholarship from the old YMCA SCUBA program to go through their Instructor Institute.  Since he was teaching a semester long scuba class for the Canton City Schools, he jumped at the chance to become a certified scuba instructor.  He was the scuba instructor for Canton Timken and McKinley high schools from 1988 through 2008.  During that time he also taught the skin and scuba diving courses for Malone University and the Canton Downtown YMCA.  He went through the DAN Oxygen Provider Instructor course and was certified by DAN as a First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Instructor. He is also an American Red Cross Instructor in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens and O2 Provider courses.  In 2001, he became an Instructor Trainer in the YSCUBA program and the equivalent CMAS 3 star Moniteur.  When he retired from public school teaching in 2008, he came to work at Sea-U-Dive where he crossed over to become an SSI Dive Control Specialist Instructor.  Since that time, he as accumulated enough experience points to become a SSI Gold 500 Instructor.  He is an instructor in 10 different scuba specialties. Mike has also become a PSI Tank Inspector and a ScubaPro Technician.

Deb (or DJ as most of the world knows her), came to aquatics late in life, learning to swim at the Canton YWCA at age 40.  From that point, she took off, becoming a swimming and lifeguarding instructor, Assistant Aquatics Director for the Canton Downtown YMCA and an Assistant Scuba Instructor.  In fact, her basic scuba class is where she met Mike, who she later married.  Deb is currently the Head Swim Instructor for the Green Family YMCA where her specialties include pre-school age swimmers (in which she has an Associates Degree from Stark State University) and the adult water aerobics classes.  She dives when she can, but at this stage in her life, prefers warm, clear water.
